TAN PREPARATION
PATCH TESTING
Patch testing required for clients who have never been spray tanned. It is recommended you have a patch test to see whether you have any reaction to the ingredients in the spray tan solution.
PERSONAL ITEMS
Please ensure you retrieve all your personal items before leaving the premises as we cannot be held responsible for lost items.
Please see spray tan prep information below which are detailed instructions on how to prep and look after your skin about 7-10 days out from your competition day. It is extremely important you read and follow the information I have provided with the recommended skin regime and ‘do’s and don’t’s’ to ensure your skin is in the best condition possible for your competition tan application. A great spray tan result is not solely dependent on the product used. The application, condition of your skin and your preparation and care of your skin is what can determine a poor result from a superior one. I have seen far too many blotchy, poor looking competition tans which could have been resolved by proper care and preparation.
Also, the Tan Out Of Tan team are all competitors and we know how extremely important a superior competition spray tan is to complement your physique. You’ve done the hard work to get your body ready for stage and the last thing you need is for it to be presented poorly which may impact your placing! The better condition that your skin is in, the better results you will have from the tan absorbing into it.
BEFORE YOUR COMPETITION SPRAY TAN
Please avoid any spray tans or use self-tanners at least 14 days before your appointment as this can lead to an uneven colour/result.
Please also be mindful of tanlines. Tanlines from sunbaking can range from subtle to obvious. Although tanlines can be minimised through spray tanning some can be unavoidable. Depending on the style of your competition bikini, trunks etc these tanlines may still be visible so it would be best to minimise or avoid sunbaking altogether before your competition.
If you are using 48-hour antiperspirants/deodorants, you will need to stop using these two days before your first spray tan session as any residue from these products can discolour your tan.
For cleansing your skin: We recommend using - Sukin Botanical Body Wash or the Sukin Soap free Body wash (if you have sensitive skin) costs approximately $8-$12 per 500ml.
For exfoliating your skin: We recommend using -Sukin Body Scrub (doesn't matter which one) (costs approximately $15 for a tube).
For moisturising your skin: We recommend using Sukin Hydrating body lotion or Sukin Soothing Body Lotion (if you have sensitive skin (costs approximately $15 for 500ml)
All are available from most Chemists – Chemist Warehouse/My Chemist/Priceline stores, etc
***Please avoid using commercially available body washes/shower gels/exfoliating scrubs/moisturisers such as Nivea, Dove, Garnier etc. If you are unsure, please check with us***
7 days prior to your spray tan appointment
7 consecutive days prior to your spray tan, shower and cleanse your body as per normal with recommended body wash. Using recommended exfoliating scrub, exfoliate your entire body paying particular attention to drier areas of the skin – ie. knees, elbows, feet/ankles, around the belly button, back of shoulders, especially in between your shoulder blades and in between your chest . In my experience, these areas are commonly exfoliated the least by clients !!
Exfoliating gloves are best to use with your exfoliating scrub. Exfoliate up until the day before but NOT on the same day as your first spray tan application, as it can be too abrasive on the skin. The exfoliating motion itself should NOT be a harsh scrub but a gentle rub in the areas outlined otherwise you may cause a rash/redness to the skin.
Moisturise every day leading up to the spray tan (but NOT on the same day as your spray tan) and for best results apply whilst skin is still moist (after every shower).
WAXING/SHAVING
Any waxing should be done at least 3-5 days prior to your spray tan to avoid any skin irritation.
Any shaving should be done 12-24 hours prior to your first tanning appointment.
If your first tanning appointment is scheduled in the morning, please shave the night before.
If your first tanning appointment is scheduled in the afternoon/evening, please shave first thing in the morning.
Any sooner than these recommended times may leave the pores exposed, collecting the tan which can result in a ‘spotty’ look. (For males – shaving your face the day prior to tanning is fine). Every individual has different skin. You know your own body and its reactions. You do not need to wax/shave your entire body. If you regularly wax or shave, continue to do so for those same areas on your body.
NOTE: If you are someone who has NEVER waxed, please do not begin waxing in preparation for your competition tan. From our experience, there is a high chance if you are new to waxing, that your skin may become very irritated and you may develop a waxing rash that can compromise the appearance of your tan. Please continue to shave instead.

NAILS - MALES
Your fingernails and toenails may be discoloured from the overspray in your tanning session and can take some time (weeks, even months!!) to disappear. To minimise this from occurring, we highly recommend painting a clear nail varnish on your fingernails and toenails prior to your first spray tan session. A nail polish remover will easily remove the varnish after your comp.
MANICURES
Any manicures and pedicure appointments should be done prior to your tanning appointment. On the same day is fine, as long as it is before your first tanning appointment. If this is not possible, you will need to ensure no water comes into contact with your hands or feet/legs.
Females - if you are painting your nails white (this includes french nails) sometimes the overspray from the tan can change the colour of your varnish (even after applying a protective barrier cream to your nails prior to your spray tan application). It doesn't happen with all white nail polish (We don't know brands, etc) Just something to be mindful of.
LASER/IPL
IPL/Laser appointments should be scheduled approximately two weeks prior to or two weeks after your competition tans
MAGNESIUM / ZINC / MEDICATION
If you are taking magnesium (this includes magnesium spray) or zinc prior to your spray tanning appointments, please be advised that for some individuals the outcome of your spray tan can affect your body’s PH levels and result as a ‘green tinge’ on your body. Other supplements and medications can affect hormonal changes in the body and may also change the outcome of your tan. It is impossible for us to advise on when/if you should suspend these supplements prior to tanning as not everyone's result is impacted. Just something to be mindful of.
HAIR
Please wash your hair a day BEFORE your first spray tan appointment. If you do need to wash your hair in between spray tan appointments you will need to do this separately – ie over a sink/basin and not in the same shower when you are washing your body or visit a hair salon where they will be able to wash for you.
EXERCISE / SAUNA / STEAM ROOM
This is our most asked question!! Do not swim, get wet, exercise or do any activity which would encourage you to perspire. Sweat acts as a barrier to the spray tan. Exercising excessively after being spray tanned can stop the spray tan developing in the area that you sweat. Walking, practicing your posing, etc is fine as long as you are not sweating!
PHOTOSHOOTS
Many competitors schedule photoshoots around their competitions. We strongly suggest you organise these shoots AFTER your competition. Your competition tan needs to develop and wearing tight clothing or pumping up prior to your shoot can compromise the result of your tan before you've even stepped on stage!
ON THE DAY OF YOUR FIRST SPRAY TAN APPLICATION
If possible and NO less than 3 hours prior to your spray tan appointment, please shower to remove any dead skin, dirt, sweat, makeup, perfume, deodorant or moisturiser so as not to create a barrier between the tanning solution and your skin. The solution will not absorb properly if these are not removed from the skin.
Please do not exfoliate on the same day as your spray tan application as it can be too abrasive on the skin.
Please do not apply any moisturiser, deodorant, perfume or make up on the same day as your spray tan and prior to your appointment, as these can affect the absorption and act as a barrier and can turn your spray tan green!
WHAT TO WEAR TO YOUR SPRAY TAN APPOINTMENT
*** This is a non-negotiable! ***
You must wear either one of the following to your spray tan appointment and to wear to bed:
Long, loose dark clothing – long pants (with drawstring if possible so it is loose around the hips) and a long sleeve top. These need to be LOOSE so borrow your brother/father/partner’s clothing if you have to!
OR
A loose onesie (which will help prevent lines from pants). This needs to be a couple of sizes bigger than your normal fit and should NOT fit snug on ANY part of your body and cannot be too tight around the ankles or wrists. A button up onesie is preferable over a zip-up onesie (There MUST be material covering the zip between you and your body). You can purchase cheap onesies at Kmart, Woolies, etc. ($15-$30 approx)
Please ensure either of these clothing is a cotton type fabric and NOT silk or satin.
NO TANNING DRESSES, SKIRTS, CROP TOPS OR ANY TIGHT CLOTHING
It is also important that your loose, dark clothing be freshly laundered and free from any deodorant and perfumes as this can transfer and rub onto your skin and turn those areas GREEN. This is a non-negotiable!
It is important to wear long legs and long sleeve clothing to bed to avoid any possible finger print marks/smudges as much as possible. This clothing is to be worn to bed. Please wear socks or gloves on your hands to bed to avoid possible hand marks/prints on your body!. Do not wear a dress or sleep naked!
Please avoid bras and tight fitted clothing such as sports crop tops and socks on each day you are being tanned , as they can rub the tan off and leave unwanted marks during the development stage. No shoes! Sandals and thongs to be worn after your spray tan.
Excess spray tan residue can often attach/rub off on clothing; this will wash out of most fabrics except nylon, silk, wool, satin and lycra. White clothing will often become off-colour over time. Anything synthetic such as silk or rayon will need to be taken to the dry cleaners to be cleaned.
DURING YOUR COMPETITION SPRAY TAN APPLICATION
It is recommended that females are sprayed naked to avoid any spray tan lines. I do have disposable g strings on hand however we recommend females getting their full body sprayed to avoid the clear the distinction between your natural skin and your spray tanned skin. Males will need to wear underwear or we can provide you with a disposable g string.
AFTER YOUR FIRST SPRAY TAN APPOINTMENT (BASE TAN APPLICATION)
Please wear the recommended clothing you have worn to your appointment.
Please DO NOT apply perfume, moisturiser, deodorant, etc within this development stage.
You need to ensure you are not doing exercises that cause excessive sweating after you have been tanned. Avoid baths, spas and swimming as this can interrupt the development of the tan and cause streaks and patchiness.
Do not apply any creams or deodorants. Avoid any water/liquid contact on the skin or this will remove the bronzer and may cause the final result to be uneven and smudged. This also means being careful when going to the toilet and also doing dishes, etc. If you do get in contact with liquid/water, don’t panic! Use a cotton wool or tissue and gently dab dry the area of skin.
If you do need to wash your hair in between spray tan appointments you will need to do this separately – ie over a sink/basin and NOT in the shower.
Avoid shaving or waxing following the spray tan application as this process removes the very top layer of the skin thus removing the tan in that area. If it is absolutely imperative that you need to shave, please use a new razor/shaver. Shaving can cause the tan to look patchy. Remember, you are being spray tanned with many layers of solution, so in the event of possible hair growth after a few days, it will rarely be seen even under harsh stage lighting.
VERY IMPORTANT
After sleeping in the solution overnight, please DO NOT shower. If you shower off your base coat you risk being too light in colour for stage and we may not be able to tan you dark enough on competition day.
COMPETITION DAY
Please wear the same clothing you have worn to your appointment/to bed to the competition venue or freshly laundered clothing as per the post tan appointment clothing requirements. You will be able to change into your trunks/bikini/costume at the venue.
Avoid any water/liquid contact on the skin. Water/liquid contact stops the tanning process immediately.
Once our team are at the venue, we may not be able to respond to phone calls and messages. We will be available at the venue for your convenience and you will find us adjacent to our Tan out of Tan banner backstage. If for some reason you are unable to locate us, please locate backstage staff who should be able to locate us and we will be able to assist with any queries and concerns you may have regarding your tan, etc.
ON THE DAY OF THE COMPETITION
The running times for your division can change right up until comp day. It is your responsibility to check with your federation and backstage staff on the day for the most up to date information for your division times.
TOP COAT TANNING AND TOUCH UPS
There is no need to book your TOP coat competition tan however we ask that you arrive to see us backstage at least 2 hours prior to your first division so we are able to tan you with ample time for you to dry if necessary.
It is YOUR responsibility to come and see us for any assistance . We do not have the capacity or resources to come and find you . We are located backstage and generally operating adjacent to our Tan Out Of Tan banner.
If you require our assistance on the day of comp for any touch ups or additional tan application (other than your top coat), you just need to approach our Tan Out Of Tan team backstage at the venue approximately - 2 hours prior to your approximate stage time. They will then advise you further closer to your stage time.
We will be extremely busy!
COMPETITION DAY CHECLIST
Bikini/Costume/trunks - Keep your bikini in a zip-lock/snap lock Glad bag (if it does not come in its own carry case) to prevent any possible liquid coming into contact with your bikini. You spent a pretty penny on it, the last thing you need is for your costume being ruined on the day!
Spare bikini/trunks/heels (if you have competed before, bring your old costume and heels just in case!)
Makeup/mirror for touch ups – mirrors are not always provided backstage and it can be a challenge for mirror space when there is one, so bring a personal hand held mirror just in case!
Jewellery/Hair Pieces & other beauty accessories - Straightener, curling iron, extensions, brush, hairspray, tweezers, etc.
Silk/Satin Robe – ladies, once you have changed into your bikini we recommend you opt for wearing a silk/satin robe over any other clothing to prevent your tan or final glaze/sheen from rubbing off.
Mini sewing kit/scissors/safety pins with scissors, safety pins, needle & thread, fabric glue, the works- just in case and to prevent wardrobe malfunctions!)
Alcohol-free Baby wipes - use these to wipe underneath your armpits if you are sweating or in place of deodorant. Wiping off a small amount of tan in your armpit will not have any impact regarding your overall presentation.
Baby oil (if you have had dream tan applied on the day of your comp, you can pour baby oil into an old towel and apply over your body to remove the dream tan)
Comp day meals/supplements /cheat meals and post comp treats/snacks – Check with your coach as this will vary for each competitor
Old, dark loose fitting clothes and thongs – please do not wear tight clothing or socks/shoes on the day of competition as this may affect and rub your tan!
Yoga mat/pillow/blanket - there can be ALOT of down time and waiting from the time you arrive to the venue, to the time you are on stage (and also in between divisions if you are competing in several categories). Lying on floors is uncomfortable, so bringing a yoga mat at the very least so you can relax and rest.
Pump up weights and therobands – these are not supplied by federations so you need to bring your own and check with your coach in case they are also bringing theirs!
Toothbrush & Toothpaste - hit the stage with polished pearly whites!
Phone, camera, headphones, charger
Umbrella – Melbourne weather!!
Suitcase with lock – I highly recommend packing all of your comp day belongings into a suitcase with wheels over a big shoulder bag (again to prevent marks on your tan from a heavy bag indent on your shoulder). Most people leave their belongings backstage once they are onstage, so unless you have someone looking after your belongings, make sure you lock your bag!
Hope this information helps and please feel free to contact me if you need any other information or advice :)
See you soon!
